All these blank walls and no permission to make art on them. Through poverty the art was reborn in St. Petersburg, FL. A block was slated to become condos... this block was one that i enjoyed thrifting and antiquing on when I was a teen... but through a downslide in the economy the block stayed stagnant and empty for years... an eyesore on the main drag of the city--Central Avenue. The block was finally found again and revitalized. It was a community effort to clean out and repair the storefronts. It was deemed to be an artist destination making way for galleries to take root and call the 600 block their home. I was blessed to have a gallery there for three years. From the empty storefronts to a slowly building bustle of shops and shoppers the block was dramatically transformed. Small beginnings were made by TesOne, Pale Horse, Vitale Brothers and Rasta Geary Taylor to bring street art murals to the block. When Christian Thomas and I painted my Gretchen and Spoonman mural... it was the first mural on that end of the block and my first spray paint mural ever. The spray paint was addicting... In one night you can cover a sizable wall with a mural--so fast, so flowing, so many beautiful lines that can be made with a fat cap. I began to work on the building manager to allow more work to be done... more murals to go up... It was a slow process but over time he began to understand that the murals brought lookers and lookers tend to shop and shopping makes his properties more valuable... It was simple enough math to make a mostly unartucated man appreciate this art. And street art murals are not always the easiest art to make people love--especially when their idea of good art is a seascape, landscape, photo realism portraits, etc. But everyone understands money.

The city of St. Pete has several large art institutions with major collections and international draw... from the gorgeous Dali museum to the Chihuly collection to the beautiful Museum of Fine arts, the Morean Arts Center and Duncan McClellan Hot shop. St. Petersburg has a lot to be proud of and we have thriving markets and grass root artist conclaves for noise music to fine art painting.

When I operated the eve-N-odd gallery I got to see tourists and locals on a daily basis. People were thrilled with my tiny gallery and almost everyone bought a little something. But what people really go ga-ga for is the street art... It's so accessible... it's free... it's for the people... they can pose with it for a selfie. It's about them and being somewhere at a time and a place. People connect with street art because it's essentially FOR them. The 600 block alley has been slowly filled with street art to make it more of a walking outdoor gallery. And because of this a street art mural tour was created where people pay to go on a tour and hear about the artists and the art they made.

I propose that the City of St. Pete make a mural walking tour from the Central Avenue alley of the 400 block up through the 700 block... All the alley space should be donated to artists who can do a non offensive piece of art. Non offensive which was perviously defined to me as "city rules" was---no guns, no drugs, no sex/nudity in the work. But other than that--the artists should be given the opportunity to paint what they want... what is in their heart to paint. I suggest that city has a fund to pay artists for their materials and money for their time. There should also be a free for all wall... where people can tag whatever they want there and rehearse their skills. (of course nothing offensive) This free wall would attract artists from all over the world to paint...

I would hope that the city would put someone in charge of this who not only has a connection to artists but is not biased by their own desire for power and control. And building owners should be rewarded for allowing the walls to be painted perhaps a break in property taxes. And building owners who refuse to participate should pay an art tax--since they refuse to support their art city they can help support the arts in another way. I wonder if this is how Berlin does things??

I know this whole idea of street art is a can of worms, so to speak... but i feel that the risk will be worth the gain and hopefully will keep everyone coloring inside the lines.
My process is the expulsion of the subconscious in reaction to the external. Deriving from my infatuation with folklore, wildlife, and the supernatural. My internal emotions and reactions to my external experiences manifest themselves into animal imagery. The paintings themselves become allegorical narratives composited of Symbolism, Surrealism, and Realism. The animal is as is; an emotion, a portrait, a memorable experience, or invoke its own symbolic origins unto the viewer. I am in search of this unison between the human and the beast-the importance of what exactly that animal means to us as the human species; in our dreams and our fears.

"There are many charming and slightly quirky galleries in St. Petersburg, and among my favorites is Eve-N-Odd Gallery, 645 Central Ave. It's a slip of a space in the Crislip Arcade in which artist Jennifer Kosharek displays her own work and that of other artists. Right now, see the work of conceptual artist Picasso Gaglione, who was an early member of the mail art movement."

Picasso Gaglione created many incarnations and identifications during his long career as a conceptual artist.

He was one of the very early correspondents in the mail art network started by Ray Johnson and his work under the post name “dadaland” is present in catalogs and the documentation of mail art shows beginning in the late 60’s and continuing to the present day. A large body of his mail art work is part of the permanent collections of the archive of the Library of San Francisco, the Center for the Book Arts in Minnesota, the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the special collections section of the Art Institute of Chicago.

A fascination with all things Italian led him to the discovery of the Futurist Sintesi theater pieces in the late 50’s and ultimately to the performance of these pieces all through the mid 70’s and into the twenty first century. His involvement with the Fluxus art movement in performance art is well documented from the mid 60’s to the present day. He currently performs at art events in museums, galleries and art centers under the title “DADA machine FLUXUS”.

He began to use rubber stamps in his artwork in the early stages of his career and finally, in the late 70’s, taught himself how to make rubber stamps for his own use. In the early 80’s he and his wife, Darlene Domel, founded the fine art rubber stamp company, “Stamp Francisco” and became an inadvertent influence in the foundation of the rubber stamp industry. For more than thirty years they have worked to encourage, teach and inspire others to produce and use rubber stamps creatively.

Gaglione offers a video tour of his very first “Rubber Stamp Museum, dating from the early 80’s, on “you tube” under the title “Abracadada Rubber Stamp Museum. They opened their first rubber stamp store in the early 80s in San Francisco. During this period Picasso also began the series of accumulation publications entitled “STAMPZINE” in which contributors were asked to contribute 75 hand stamped pages. He then compiled the pages and designed the covers. All contributors received an issue containing these original art pieces and museums and art libraries regularly collected editions.

Picasso took this craft into fine art world in the 90’s with the creation of his “ StampArt Gallery”. He decided that the gallery would exclusively exhibit the use of rubber stamps in fine art by notable international artists. He personally selected each subject and researched information for every monthly show. He designed a unique poster and catalog for each event. The gallery poster collection was recently featured in a one-man show in New York City and the catalogs are now part of the permanent collection of the library of New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

.

He is recognized as one of the earliest creators of art “zines’ and other limited edition art magazines beginning in the early 70’s. He coined the word “Dadazine” to describe these works. He was an active participant in the development of the “artistamp” concept and still uses his own antique perforating machine to create limited editions of his “Stamp Art” zines, the conceptual combination of both art forms.

One of Picasso’s most innovative creations is the limited edition box set. Each of these handmade box sets usually, but not always, contains a combination of his favorite art forms: a rubber stamp, a zine - often entirely hand stamped, and an artistamp sheet focused on a subject of some particular fascination to him. They are produced in very limited editions and succinctly reflect his rather whimsical perspective on some provocative and often obscure fragment of art history.

The works in this show contain a capricious collection of altered antique photographs bearing the unique “Gaglione” signature. With pen and ink Picasso carefully creates another layer of complex designs over the old images in a kind of dada art graffiti that transforms the antique into a modern, witty dynamic. He draws history into fantasy.

Picasso Gaglione never stops making art or discovering new ways to make art. Examples of his works can be found in private collections and major art museums worldwide

Picasso Gaglione and his wife currently reside in Lake Villa Illinois, outside Chicago. He still produces a line of rubber stamps in addition to his other artworks. He can be found actively corresponding with other artists all over the world via his “facebook” page.

THE LOOP is my first conceptual piece in the eve-N-odd gallery and of my own making. (Jennifer Kosharek)
The Loop consists of a scroll of messages from an imaginary man and chronicles the last days of the relationship when he abruptly ends the connection. There are around 300 text messages documented in an endless loop of paper. Many people who get dumped in a relationship are left thinking about the horrible things the other person did to them. What if you could just remember the positive things?? The Loop is about reliving, remembering the good times you had. 17 days or 17 years... it does not matter... take time... remember love. Don't focus on the loss... just the good. This is what the Loop is all about. He gave me the 17 best days of my life.

Fear makes us do strange things... we change our behavior because of fear in our lives. The Loop is also a reminder to change your way of thinking--do not dwell on the negative. Do not let the negatives in life keep you from living and having new adventures. Do not be ruled by your fears.

The Loop scroll is in the middle of the gallery and takes up a lot of the space. It makes coming into the gallery inconvenient and crowded. Sometimes when someone new comes in to your life... this is how it feels at first--like a total inconvenience. I wanted this art piece to interrupt the viewer from their normal movements and visual existence. The Loop is an interruption in life.

The eve-N-odd gallery will be open late February 9th for the Artwalk. Join us from 6-10pm to see the Loop in person.

February 14th, Thursday from 5-6 the eve-N-odd gallery will be hosting performance art events. If you would like to perform: poetry readings, fluxus performance, story telling... please email me at evenoddgallery@gmail.com . If you cannot make it yourself--I would be happy to perform the piece on your behalf.

February 14th line up includes: Lydia Gottardi and Velva Lee Heraty and Jennifer Kosharek
Velva will be reading, "My Chocolate Loving Vampire". Emmanuel Roux is donating chocolate for the occasion.
